Finding Hope Among the Thorns of Cancer

I had a piece published this week on The Mighty that I thought I'd share with you.

It's called "Finding Hope Among the Thorns of Cancer."

As you all know, Hope is important to me. It's easy to lose, too. Follicular Lymphoma can be overwhelming, sometimes in ways we don't expect it to be.

It's helpful to me to have reminders of Hope that I can see.

This story is about one of them.

I hope you like it.

  3. Wonderful story, Bob. This journey teaches us things that should be obvious, but may have been forgotten somewhere in the course of life. It takes a flood for you to look for land again or something like that.

It reminded me of one distinct memory from my younger days. I was about 16-17, working at a garden center and doing landscaping. I was on my knees in mulch, pulling weeds or planting a shrub and noticed the most colorful grasshopper I had ever seen. I was memorized, it shimmered green and gold and orange, the tiniest intricate parts of its structure seemed decorated as some ancient armor. Simply iridescent. Finally after several moments of being awestruck, I noticed that this little critter was completely missing one of its rear legs. I learned something that day, and I've never let it go.

  4. A great lesson, John. Nice that you learned it so young. Some of us have to learn it later, the hard way. (But we learn it.)
