Happy Independence Day!
Our town had its fireworks display last week. the kids enjoyed it, as always. Here are a couple of pictures:
(Yeah, I know, they're better in person. If you want the Hamden fireworks in action, click here.
It really wasn't much more exciting than the photos, was it?)
Anyway, if you've never read the Declaration of Independence, read it here, from the National Archives web site. You can also hear it being read on this site.
About 15 years ago, I heard someone say he re-read the Declaration every year on July 4th. I can't claim to have done the same, but I do break it out every now and then. Pretty amazing document, if you know the history. I was reminded of that history recently when I read the John Adams biography. If you're not up for that, rent 1776 some time -- you get history + great songs. (Our kids loved the songs, but we forgot how much of the movie involved the members of Congress discussing...um...how much they missed their wives....)
Enjoy your independence. Have a happy Fourth.
Happy 4th, although it's the 6th. I suppose I could speculate rudely about which current political figures and pundits might have been Tories then, because of their comfort with executive authority, but I'll save it. But you might notice that a number of items in Jefferson's bill of particulars apply to our current government.
ReplyDeleteThe California Bucks are just back from our driving adventure; we drove up the coast, spent a few days in Portland with the Oregon Bucks (Tom and Mary, often seen in the comment section here), and back down the middle via Crater Lake. Thanks to the California wildfires, there was a lot of smoke in the air except right on the coast, but we had a great time.
